| The crankcase was machined from a single forged steel billet originally weighing nearly 500 pounds. The finished weight is between thirty and forty pounds. Although aluminum is available, it isn't used because the necessary techniques for creating complex castings are still in the developmental stages. Thus, all the steel removed during machining is scrap. Each cylinder mount is a threaded hole in which the cylinder is threaded to the proper height and orientation. Lock rings on the cylinders keeps them securely fixed in place. This crankcase is sitting with the front end up. |
