Fuselage Refurbishing
December 1999

The overall condition of the fuselage is good.  Only a few members needed replacing.  The remainder are part of the original air frame from 1918.  The spider plate (steel plate in front) is a hand made replica of the original which had become fatigued with age.  It serves several purposes.  First it holds the front of the motor mount beams.  It holds together the front part of the fuselage.  Lastly, the radiator is attached to it.  Ken Cassen did a superb job on the spider plate.  The bright wood is what needed replacing.  The top rails at the cockpit openings are reinforced with additional wood.  These points are an inherent weak point and saftey hazard.  Many pilots were speared by splintered top rails during a crash.
